    Hi Ian & Andrew, Its all we have is memory's. and listening to your fishing memory's was fantastic. The statement Andy made that we only have 20 years left to fish for a salmon made me very mad. What has 40 years of pandering to these Biologists & scientist done for the salmon. Their achievement is putting the salmon on the red list of endanger species. You name one river that's full of fish. Ian you stated the riparian owners are hand cuffed and can't do anything, we have to be more active and get the hatcheries up and running. To finish, personal its not 20 years its more like 10 years if we are lucky. Alan Robinson

    Please please please continue to chat to that very knowledgeable gentleman and put it out on UA-cam because I for one could listen to the two of you all day. The one thing I liked about Lewis & Harris albeit twenty years ago when I was a Director of The Stornoway Angling Assoc Ltd was that on every Saturday which was handover day on North Harris Estates incorporating Amhuinnsuidhe Castle the Stornoway Angling Assoc & Harris Angling club took it in turns to fish the water and I certainly made the most of those opportunities to fish Voshmid and some of the other lochs on the estate. This meant that the locals got to enjoy what the guests were enjoying for £10 each rather than the rumoured £20k a week or five days as they had. You know my thoughts on hatcheries and the pair of you I assume are erring to that way of thinking. My question to the two of you is if Atlantic Salmon are going to die out in our rivers within twenty years why are we not encouraging the Pinks to set up breeding stocks to continue the sport that we all love. If they are overcoming the obstacles to set up new colonies in our rivers could they get to the stage of population you guys enjoyed in past years longer ago than the twenty five of my Salmon fishing experience. I know I am going to take some heat for this but I am still asking the question.

    • @IanGordonsalmonfishing
      @IanGordonsalmonfishing 22 дні тому

      Ho John, im glad you enjoyed our chat and that it spawned this interesting question. Personally I dont think salmon are heading for extinction but unless we adopt some radicle measures then we may not be angling for them 20 years from now. The Pink salmon will, in my opinion, colonise slowly anyway as we will not have the ability to stop them should they wish to do so. Good question. Thank you.

    I remember a gillie telling me of a lady who used to somehow tie her fly straight to the main line and still caught fish, since then I've been less bothered about what I use. Having said that, I still carry both clear and brown Maxima and use whichever feels right on the day.

      I’ve heard stories like that too, had an acquaintance recently starting in fly fishing and he didn’t know you had to put a leader on so he just tied the fly to the line (idk how he managed to pass the line through the eye of the hook), and he still managed to catch fish, but I’ve also experienced rivers where if I don’t use a 15ft leader I’m not going to catch anything, I guess every inch of the river is different in all aspects 🤣🤣🤣

    Thanks Ian - I think I have misunderstood this move and been doing it wrong for years. I have been lifting the line off the water and sweeping the rod around to the anchor point by dipping my shoulders - rather than change the elevation using the plane of my wrist. I sense it is why I get stuck as I then try to lift the rod upwards and move into the forward stroke. I hope my explanation makes sense. Thanks again - really enjoy watching your video clips.

Mine was North Harris Estates Loch Voshmid and after being lucky enough to fish that amazing loch and a few of their other lochs one of which we had fifty Sea Trout to the boat on a spectacular Saturday. I have ticked that off my list. I would say Patagonia and their famed Sea trout would be next if I won the lottery. I would need a decent Ghillie as my eyesight & hand tremor make it increasingly difficult for tying flies onto leaders. Anyone in mind?@@IanGordonsalmonfishing

    What interests me is that atlantics EVERYWHERE are declining rapidly. This tells you that the localized problems (fish farms, goosanders, seals, fertilizer runoff, increased sewerage, unmanaged fishing at sea, warmer summers etc.) are not the central problem as the decline is universal across all geographies. Which points the finger to the one central place where all salmon go and where their localized problems are discounted -- namely, the sea. If we fix the local problems, it will help -- but until we stop what's killing them on the banks, we most likely won't see a real improvement.

    • @IanGordonsalmonfishing
      @IanGordonsalmonfishing 2 місяці тому

      I totally agree that most of the salmons problems are at sea, and for all different reasons the balance between predation and pray is not favouring salmon at this time. Man is the main perpetrator.
